At a time of great distress, Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, came to earth and shed her grace on all those in need, taking the form of Tulasi, the sacred Basil plant. Those who brought her into their homes where twice blessed with their abodes purified and their lives empowered by wondrous prosperity. The great time of distress finally ended when Lakshmi granted the saint-king Dharmadhvaja a daughter — Tulsi, the Matchless One — who was Lakshmi in human form.
In the Skanda Purana it is said: ‘Tulasi is auspicious in all respects. Simply by seeing, simply by touching, simply by remembering, simply by praying to, simply by bowing before, simply by hearing about or simply by sowing this tree, there is always auspiciousness. Anyone who comes in touch with the Tulasi tree in the above-mentioned ways lives eternally in the Vaikuntha world. (the celestial abode of Vishnu).”
